David Sedaris Doesn’t Do It For Me
I finished my first Sedaris book, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, last week. I laughed a little bit. Parts of it made me think some. I have absolutely no urge whatsoever to read another one of his books.
My friend Stephen tried to offer some encouragement. He let me borrow his iPod and listen to Sedaris reading Sedaris at Carnegie Hall. Again, I couldn’t really get into it. I think it was the fact that paying to hear an author read something you’ve already read makes no sense.
I know a lot of people love him, but, like Lost in Translation, it gets classified in my ‘Waste of Time’ drawer.
Yes, I took on the sacred Lost in Translation. I hate that movie. I don’t care what it meant to you, I don’t care what I didn’t get about it, I don’t care that it was groundbreaking or introspective or anything else. It was boring and a waste of my time.
Now that I think about it, Sedaris was slightly better than Lost in Translation. So, I’ll put David Sedaris in my ‘Not a Huge Fan’ pile.

I hear you about "Dress Your Family...", I'm a pretty big fan of his, but I had a hard time even finishing it. I was pretty disappointed.
The first work of his that I fell in love with was "Me Talk Pretty One Day". I beg of you, try reading that book. Even the audio recordings of him reading from that book are fantastic.
I think if you read "Me Talk Pretty", at least that book will do it for you. It's, in my opinion his funniest, but its also an insightful and interesting account of someone living in France, but they don't speak the language.
I can understand why someone who has only read "Dress your family..." would say that David Sedaris doesn't do it for him.
