This is Complete Crap

Seriously. Why is this story in The Tennessean? I'm all for a diversity of voices and open religious dialogue, but this is just a daily devotional. And it sucks. And it's not news. So why is it in the newspaper?

Having grown up in a newspaper family, this kind of thing burns me. Under the guise and rationale of it being a columnist piece, not a journalistic one, they print this "crap".

Don't get me wrong. I believe in columnists. There is an important place for them, but both the writers and the papers need to exercise integrity and some common sense in printing.

Alas, I don't see it getting any better on the horizon.

Peace,
Jamie

Please tell me this was printed in the religion section. Oh wait, it says "news". Yes, this is wacko. I've never read anything so vague and poorly written in a newspaper that served a town of more than 20,000. Wow. The Tennessean really does suck. And the funny thing is I new that he was Church of Christ before I even read the bio. But most CofC preachers I've heard (and I spent 20something years as a Church of Christer) can at least make their tired old crap sound vaguely interesting.

Playing the part of the devils advocate on the side of christianity - I'd say that some people are into religion like some people are into sports. Now, some people would say that sports really isn't news either, but it's there. It is of interest to readers.

while i don't think that it belongs in the "news" section, i don't have a problem with it as an article were it placed into the right section.

consequently, i kind've agree with the guy. go figure...

In the print version, this was in the "Faith & Values" section. On their website, Faith & Values is listed under the News drop-down menu.

They do this every Saturday - an article by a minister of some sort, along with a commentary (usually with a strong pro-Christian/anti-anybody else slant), a story about somebody whose life was changed by faith or whatever, and listings of local church events and services. Personally, I could do without it, but... it's The Tennessean.

I'm into religion like some are into sports, but you know if someone submitted an article that said, "Gosh, I really like golf. Its so cool. Everyone should get some clubs and go play golf." the Tennessean wouldn't print it in the sports section. They wouldn't print it at all. This article is about on that level. And wherever the print version may place it, the web version puts it in the news section and that is just dumb.

I don't neccesarily believe that the Christian message is watered "down duck soup", but I believe that there has been a departure from the "New Testament Church". People today hear the words yet sit comfortably from thier pews as other christians reach out to the poor, bring in the sinners, and journey side by side, Jews and Gentiles, into the ways of Christ and taking that message to the masses, as we are called to do.
