Are You So Nashville?

Nashville Scene's annual You Are So Nashville If... issue came out today. I sent in a submission, and I didn't win, but I seemed to have made at least one person laugh. Not too bad for four seconds of inspiration.

Some think that this year's issue is a little weak, and I'd have to agree. Perhaps the Scene can't garner the submissions they once did, or perhaps since Nashville is slowly morphing into nearly every other city in America (as our local eateries are priced out of their leases and Starbucks appear within half a mile of each other). Either way, being so Nashville ain't as easy as it used to be.

I was just going to email and ask if that was you. I agree that it was weak this year.

I think it's good that the newspaper is trying to maintain a sense of local identity. It's hard for many small cities to do so with all of the national chain stores taking over and the homogenized tv for the entire nation.

Unfortunately it looks like a lot of the local people are homophobic church fanatics. Is that true or did they just play up that stereotype about the South to be funny?

The stereotype was played up, but it still very much exists (unfortunately). This paper is a local weekly ad-heavy rag with little news (one full length expose usually ignored by the mainstream media) and lots of ads and arts reviews. It was just bought by a larger comglomerate and some have said feels more corporate now.

Yes, some things about the south unfortunately really are VERY backwards.
