Random Fun

Last night, I had the opportunity that only comes along once or so in a lifetime. I dressed up in a giant squirrel costume.

Lynnette had rented the costume for a marketing gig at the Publishing House and it was 7:30 at night, there was nothing on TV, and really nothing else to do. (Besides, I have already dressed up as a gorilla, the Brazilian Bone, Price Charming, and a pirate, so this was a chance to check 'giant squirrel' off my list.) So, we went to her office, I got dressed and we drove to see my parents.

On the way there, clad in squirrel costume, stuffed into a tiny Cabrio, we got a few stares, particularly from one car, whose passenger stuck her head out of the window and looked back at us as we drove south on 8th. It made Lynnette laugh.

I rang the doorbell at my parents’ house, and they laughed with confusion as they opened the door. Then my sister came over and first noticed the oversized rodent (?) on the couch, talking with the family. A plan was soon hatched to scare my other sister.

We drove to their house and Maribeth called Molly and friend outside to see the “large dog or something in the backyard.” I couldn’t resist jumping on their trampoline outside and I got a little scare out of the friend.

All in all, our rendezvous was over by about 9. We had a few laughs, took a few pictures, and left with a few stories. There are some 'opportunities of a lifetime' that are easy to not bypass: going to Paris, watching the World Series in person, or meeting the pope. But I encourage my readers to not pass up those other opportunities of a lifetime, those random fun moments that come out of nowhere.

So dress up as a giant squirrel, act like a fool in Wal-Mart, or laugh out loud at yourself. After all, lots of people meet the pope, but not everyone has a story about costumed fun on a Tuesday night.

Get a job!

Nice post, and good for you. That'll keep life's stress levels down.

sadly, our squirrel costume looked rather shabby compared to the one in the picture.

unbelieveable, but I guess in a way there is no such thing as that with you my friend.

Oh yes, I can attest to the days you had a double identity as Preacher Sam and the Brazilian Bone. You pulled off the ficitious character with great hilarity that has left memories in my mind I still chuckle at from time to time. I'm glad Sam that though you are now married and growing sizably in sophistication, you can still cut up just for the sake of carving out a memory and making someone smile. Thanks for turning off the T.V and allowing your imagination to turn a mundane evening into a not-soon-to-be forgetton anecdote! That's a great breath of fresh air my friend. Eddie

squirrel costume + trampoline = flying squirrel which i think are good hunting here in tennessee. i'd count your blessings that no one shot you.

It is like if the costume came with a personality as well, one always transforms in another person, a more crazy one who doesn't care what it does.

It is so cool when one get to wear a costume, it really make you feel good.
